His Character
Matthew 20:24-28 (ESV) 24 And when the ten heard it, they were indignant at the two brothers. 25 But Jesus called them to him and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 26 It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Today, in our world, people are often defined by their titles, status, degrees, power, money, and possessions. Based on cultural “norms,” a person who is CEO of a company must be “greater” than the janitor who cleans the restrooms. The world often looks at those who have more as more important. Their voice carries more weight, their opinions are right, and they become the standard we are judged against.
This in no way disparages those who seek new opportunities or those who are already in positions of influence. It is saying the world is not the standard, but the Kingdom of God is. It is a matter of the heart; that is what Christ was pointing out in Matthew 20. Those who have more are not more valuable to Yahweh. Yahweh focuses on the character of the person, and are they a reflection of His principles? Do not find your identity in those things in this world. Because, as a son and as a daughter, you are joint heirs with Christ in Yahweh’s Kingdom. Your identity is in Him, not what you can do or what you own.
So, as you start your day, consider your life and your approach to your responsibilities and opportunities. Are you faithful and excellent in whatever role Yahweh gives you? Are you faithful to the finances He entrusted to you? Are you pursuing His Kingdom? He may have you be a CEO one day, and on another day, you could be digging ditches. Regardless, how are you approaching the possibilities you are given? I say, be as Christ and reflect His character, not the world.
