Lock Eyes With Yahweh
Consider this. In Genesis 3, after Eve ate from the tree, Yahweh said: “And I will put hostility between you [the serpent] and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.” (Genesis 3:15)
So what does that mean for us, today?
There are a few things to look at for necessary context. First, it states that both Eve and the serpent would have offspring– meaning that generations would come behind both of them. Secondly, this verse isn’t talking about natural ‘snakes’. It’s referring to the shrewd, wild, lying thieves of purpose that are opposed to Yahweh in all shapes and sizes. And finally, who are the descendants of Eve? That’s you, and me, and anyone else who has–or ever will– live.
After many generations, how many serpents lurk– and even rule– places meant for us?
In this verse, the Hebrew word translated as “hostility” is derived from the root אֵיב (ʾev, “to be hostile, to be an adversary”). So friends, we have been charged, since Genesis 3:15 by Yahweh, as descendants of Eve, to be adversaries of the serpents that seek to destroy purpose.
So am I suggesting that there are serpents around every corner, and that we are to live a life of conflict? Not necessarily. But, it’s important to be able to recognize a serpent when you encounter one. It’s also important to know that our best defense is rarely a direct conflict, but instead choosing where you focus. One of the greatest weapons of the serpent is to steal our attention and our time. Don’t let them. Lock eyes with Yahweh, give Him your “Yes”, and you’ll find that the serpents you face wind up conquered and slithering away.
