Better Than You Imagined
If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know.1 Corinthians 8:2
Have you heard of “vain imaginations?” I’ve heard this phrase many times over the years, but recently it came to life for me. This is basically when we think we know someone else’s heart, and we position ourselves accordingly, but our imaginings are wrong. It can be a destructive place, and one that we may easily find ourselves in when we let our thoughts run wild without real truth or wisdom.
Recently, I found my feelings hurt by something I thought I understood. I considered, and I wasn’t angry over the situation. There was no one to blame, but in the circumstances, I felt wounded. I’d thought about how to make my peace with it, when, suddenly and unprompted, I found that there was something very tender and thoughtful happening behind the scenes. I’d thought I was working with the most generous interpretation of others’ intentions, but even my imagination wasn’t as thoughtful and kind as the truth.
We’re humans, and our minds and hearts try to make sense of things around us in all kinds of ways. Today, I remind you to reconsider any stories you’ve been telling yourself about others’ intentions. Only Yahweh truly knows the heart. If there is something that you’ve been repeating in your mind, begin to be generous about the situation. Ask Yahweh, really. Ask Him. Seek out His perspective. Seek out truth, not for vindication or evidence, but for life. For blessing. For relationship. You may find your cup running over, for He is even better than you imagined.
