Use Your Influence Wisely
I have talked about how I believe virtual reality is getting in the way of reality – what’s happening right before our eyes. I charge you to again consider what virtual reality through your phone, tablet, iPad, or computer is costing you. Most don’t consider the cost until it is too late and there is no undo button. Reading an email while sitting with your loved one means you miss being present in the moment. Listening to a podcast with your AirPods while watching a tv show with your loved one means you miss being present in the moment. Many would argue, “I can do both!” But that is exactly the problem – you can’t do both 100% and your loved ones deserve 100% of your undivided attention.
Today I charge you to consider the effect virtual reality is having on the youth of this generation. How many teenagers have you tried to talk to that are unable to maintain eye contact or hold a productive conversation without seeming uncomfortable? How many times do you walk in a room full of young adults and find that not one of them greets you? How is it they can send a long text message or post a long and heartfelt post on social media, but are incapable of communicating those same truths face to face?
I believe that it is worth considering the cost. Not just for yourself, but for the next generation. How are you using your influence? What do they see you doing? Yahweh made you the elder because your influence is necessary to shape them into the person He wants them to become. Yahweh made you the elder because you are a key in them fulfilling their purpose. Don’t just do what society tells you is okay, seek Holy Spirit on how you can be an influence that encourages those around you to be present in the moment, before they miss the moment.
