Our Words Can Heal or Destroy
“A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.” Proverbs 15:4
We should all know by now that our words have power, but let’s break down specifically what effects they can have on our surroundings and the people around us. Our words can bring healing. The right word spoken when Yahweh says to speak can literarily bring restoration to someone’s physical or mental health. Our words can bring encouragement. Yahweh may put someone in your life today that is waiting for just the right word from you. Our words can bring lifelong change. We can change someone’s entire trajectory just by speaking life to them. They may have been on one course, and we can put them on a completely different path, one of life and peace!
However, our words can also devastate. As the above passage says, they can break a spirit. As powerful as they are for the positive, they can be just as powerful for the negative. I would encourage you this week to choose your words carefully. Whether you are in line at the grocery store, speaking to a co-worker or talking to family, remember to speak life. Be the positive person in the room when everyone else around you is negative. You never know who is listening or whose life you are affecting with your words.
