Good Name
Ecclesiastes 7:1 (ESV) 1 A good name is better than precious ointment, and the day of death than the day of birth.
Have you ever heard the quote, “What’s in a name?” This quote originated from William Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet. The full quote is “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet.” In other words, it does not matter what something is named, but who or what they are is most important.
I understand the objective of this statement and the context in which it was made. But the truth is that a name is important, and it does matter. Yahweh points out the value of a “good name” in Ecclesiastes 7, for the name is a reflection of one’s reputation and character. For instance, when you hear the name Jesus, what do you think of? What do you consider? Every person will have specific impressions and beliefs about Jesus just by hearing His name. It will solicit thoughts and emotions about Him. For me, when I hear Jesus’ name, it produces peace and a recognition of Who and What He is in my life—more than I can describe in words.
Recognizing the value in a name, what do people consider when they hear your name? Granted, a name is not the person, but it does represent who and what the person is. It is a reflection of you. So, as you start your day, ask yourself what my reflection is to others. Do you have a good name?
