Start A Fire

The Rock of Central Florida   -

A woman from Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give me a drink.” (For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?” (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.) Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.” The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Are you greater than our father Jacob? He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John‬ ‭4‬:‭7‬-‭14‬

I asked some of my closest friends to focus on, “Jesus answered her, ‘If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.’” and then share what they found significant about that moment. Below are some of their responses:

That our heart and intent matter so we know to ask the right questions

When we give focus or attention to the correct source, we ask the right questions, which lead to life changing answers.

I see the gift as the one thing, that when we “open” it, is not for a single drink to then set aside and forget until I need it again. But this gift is an ongoing, perpetual fountain, once you drink from Him, you become that wellspring of life.

My attention went to the fact that He almost questions her discernment of when it is her time to give, and when it is her time to receive. She couldn’t see that the resource was in front of her. She was focused on being the resource as opposed to encountering the supply of Heaven.

“If you knew Him, you would ask Him” Intimacy with God allows us to know that He is eager to give us good gifts and there’s no shame in asking for them.

It provoked me. First, I thought about how important it is to consider. Then, I considered…has He ever asked me to do something because I failed to ask Him first.

I too was moved by the need to consider! It’s vital, it can bring life or death, but I must choose to do it. What have I done out of routine or because I thought it was right, without considering?

As you start your day, I ask you… what is significant about that moment to you? Spread the word! Share it on your social media. Text it to your friends. Talk about it with your coworkers. Be the spark that starts a fire today!
