Refocus By Giving Thanks
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (ESV) 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
“Giving thanks” to Yahweh is a very common theme throughout scripture, and often He directs us to present our thanks. As you can read in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, we are directed to “give thanks in all circumstances.” Giving thanks in good times is easy, but in those testing seasons or times of distress, it can be difficult. You get a promotion, someone you love is healed, a relationship is reconciled, and you overcome a fear. Each one of these is amazing, and when they occur, it becomes easy to rejoice and give thanks.
But the real question is: what was your response prior to the promotion, healing, reconciliation, or victory? Was it stress, anger, frustration, hopelessness, or thanklessness? Did you question where Yahweh was during your hardship or trial? Giving thanks refocuses your heart, mind, and spirit. It enables you to move your faith toward Yahweh and away from your circumstances. Furthermore, it strengthens you, deepens your relationship with the Father, and inspires hope.
So, as you start your day, consider when you give thanks to Yahweh. Is it only when a positive outcome has blessed you, or do you do it all the time, even in the midst of your storm? Be challenged and give thanks to Yahweh even when you do not feel like it. Giving thanks refocuses your attention on Him and not on your situation.
