Naysayers
And David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth.” 1 Samuel 17:32-33
The story of David fighting the Philistine, Goliath, is probably one of the most well-known stories in the entire Bible. In fact, it is so well-known, people that do not know God or read the Bible have heard this story.
Often, the emphasis is placed on how a young shepherd boy with a sling and a few rocks slayed a seasoned, skilled, giant warrior. Yes, the feat was tremendous and conveyed courage, faith, and determination in the heart of David. But truly, the war David was facing started well before he stepped into the valley to face Goliath.
David would face his first battle of this war when he volunteered to King Saul to fight the giant. King Saul’s response was not of confidence or support, but of disbelief and apprehension to the point that he discouraged David from fighting Goliath. King Saul was frozen in fear and was trying to dissuade David. But David was full of faith. Not faith in his own ability, but the mighty power of Yahweh God. David knew in his heart that Yahweh had his back, and no “uncircumcised” thug will berate or dishonor His God or God’s chosen people.
Have you ever faced something similar in your life? Have you ever had someone tell you, “You cannot do it,” “you are not qualified,” or “you are not good enough?” We all have encountered those naysayers, those people who put more trust in the circumstances instead of faith in the God that we serve. What giant are you facing, and what are your naysayers saying?
So, as you start your day, do not allow the naysayers to stop you from Yahweh’s will and plan for your life. Do not allow those seeds of doubt, fear, or discouragement put a limit on you or your purpose! For we serve a mighty God, and with Him all things are possible. Get ready and let’s defeat your giant.
