“Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.” 2 Corinthians 10:12
“Oh, don’t worry; we wouldn’t dare say that we are as wonderful as these other men who tell you how important they are! But they are only comparing themselves with each other, using themselves as the standard of measurement. How ignorant!” Corinthians 10:12
Comparing oneself to others is such a common behavior most people do without even knowing it. We compare our careers, our homes, our cars, our talents, our positions, our vacations, our churches. If we are honest with ourselves, we even compare our families with other families. Many times, we shape how we value ourselves on these comparisons.
There is a fine line between comparing oneself from a place of coveting and offense, versus from a place of aspiration and purpose. Let me explain; when one compares from a place of coveting and offense, their position is focused on what they lack and on their perceived shortcomings. Many times, these shortcomings turn into frustration, low confidence, and sometimes even anger. It impacts their own performance, their relationships, and most importantly, their walk with God. They begin to blame others for their condition, and in time, this mindset becomes an offense. For example, we have heard people say, “they were born with a silver spoon in their mouth,” or “why does God bless them and not me,” or “why did they get promoted and not me, I have been with the company longer.” This is a destructive road if taken. In Luke 12:15 we are directed not to covet others, and in Jeremiah 29:11, we must trust the Father in our own journey, not envy someone else’s.
To compare from a place of aspiration and purpose can be extremely constructive. When one sees someone achieve success or recognition, it can become an example or a standard to strive for. It can create inspiration in one’s heart to move forward, to work, to be disciplined, and it can provide hope! Sometimes it can provide a pathway when a person is unsure of the next step. The Father uses people and puts them in our lives to serve as inspirations and to help us fulfill His purpose in our own journey. You never know who He will send. He sent Paul (1 Corinthians 11:1), a former pharisee to be a standard to help us become more like Christ.
So, as you start your day, do a self-check, and consider how you view others related to your own life. Allow your heart to be led by Holy Spirit and seek inspiration not offense.
