The Seed

“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.” Galatians 6:7

In today’s world, we have a hyper focus on what we can “get” from other people or from different circumstances. We often ask, what will we gain, reap, harvest, or how will this benefit me?

More times than not, the world approaches relationships as what we can “get” or “gain” from the other person. It can be material items, it can be their time, their attention, or even their bodies. It becomes a mindset of “I did this for you” (sowed), so “you must do this for me” (reap). Our motivation becomes more self-centered with the emphasis on what my harvest is and is no longer on the care for the other person.

We all have had thoughts of, “I did all this, and this is how I am treated.” Our attention becomes self-focused on, “what’s in it for me.” Thus, do we treat people that hold positions of power differently? Or individuals with money better than those without? Do we value people on the benefits we may gain from them, or do we see them as God sees them? Someone with great value, that was fearfully and wonderfully made for a unique purpose.

Do not get me wrong, it is wonderful to receive a good harvest, but our focus should not be on what we reap; our focus should be on what we have sown and our hearts behind why we have sown. What seed are you sowing? Why are you sowing? In Galatians 6:7, it communicates we have control of the seed we choose to plant. Is your seed full of love, grace and patience or is it one of greed, selfishness, and manipulation? We must take our eyes off of the end result and put it back on what we are called to plant, for it is God that gives the increase.

“So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase.” 1 Corinthians 3:7

As you start your day, consider the seeds you are sowing today – your words, your deeds, and your reactions. What seeds has He put into your hands? What opportunities has He provided you?

“Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap, but by the seeds that you plant.” Robert Louis Stevenson

“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Mark 10:45
