The Storm
In Matthew 8:23-27 is the well-known event where Jesus and His twelve disciples were in a boat, and they came up against a “great storm.” In fact, the storm was so intense, the twelve disciples were filled with fear and thought they were going to die. In contrast, Jesus was at peace and was sleeping during this “great storm.” The disciples ended up waking Jesus, hoping He would be able to do something. He awoke, addressed first their faith, and then calmed the natural storm.
But which storm was more poignant for these twelve men? Yes, there was the natural storm around them that could have potentially led to their demise, but was there not also an internal storm they were also facing? A storm of fear, of doubt, of worry, of hopelessness, etc. How many times do we allow the external storms we face create another storm within our spirit? Or maybe those storms are sent just to expose the spiritual storms we deal with. Notice that Jesus addressed their spiritual storm first, before he addressed the external one.
Some of you are facing some difficult issues that, in the natural, appear to be unbearable and terrifying. The STORM is overwhelming, and generating negative emotion and effect. It may be a relationship, a job, finances, or even church. But remember, external storms (tribulations) will always come because of the fallen world we live in!!!
So I say, let those storms come!!! Choose to face the storm HEAD ON, and recognize the opportunity you have been given. I am not saying it will be easy or comfortable, but as the storm was used to do a work in the twelve disciples, allow it to do the same in you. Allow the overwhelming waves and wind to expose the spiritual storms within you. If it is doubt, or fear, or anxiety, or hopelessness, let them be exposed. Allow Christ to address them! Remember as you start your day, Christ has not left or forsaken you, but He wants to set you free. As you come head on with your storm, He will empower you to overcome it!!!
“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’ So we can confidently say, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?’” Hebrews 13:5-6
