Peace in Repentance
“Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us…” Heb 12:1
It is likely that if you asked ten different people to define peace you would probably get ten different answers, with some similarities. Peace is customized to the person taking part. Some may soak in a hot tub or jacuzzi, others may exercise – Peace can be active or passive. Ultimately, the individual is looking for an escape from life’s disturbances. Repentance is defined as a strong positive change of the mind. Both the Hebrew and Greek defines repentance as, “To make a strong turn toward a new course of action.” However, the emphasis is on the word turn or turning. Turning to a more positive action, away from the less desirable one.
Understand, emotions and thoughts are actions too. Actions are not just physical things done. Usually, the physical action is the manifestation of the idealistic action. When Jesus taught – what the church refers to as “B Attitudes,” to the multitude, He stresses that murder and adultery began in the heart, before there was an action and repentance was required before a gift was brought to the altar. (Matt 5:21-30) Therefore, repentance will usually happen internally. In the secret place where only you and Yahweh know.
So, how do peace and repentance coincide with one another? How are we to lay aside the weight and sin which closely cling to us? Honestly, the answer is simple, but not always easily achieved. Many times, it will be the hardest kind of battle to be fought. The emotional actions are as real as the physical actions. However, the answer is to repent! We are to make a strong turning away to a more desirable and pleasurable choice. Philippians 4:8 says,
“Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”
Be encouraged! Repentance is not just for the sinner, it is for all those who desire peace!
Yes, and Amen!
